IN 2010, the total number of shipping pallets in use in North America is estimated to be in excess of two billion, with the dominant market share (90%) being made of wood. Annual production of new pallets in the USA is estimated to be over 800 million, valued about $20 billion per annum, of which 90% are wood.
Pallet manufacture in the USA uses more than 750 million cubic feet of new hardwood annually – that is equivalent to approximately 3.5 million trees.
Generally, pallets are made of wood, plastic, metal, or cardboard. Existing moulded plastic pallets – made of either polyethylene or polypropylene, currently make up about 7.5% of pallets used. Because of cost and strength limitations, pallets made with existing plastic technology are considered only a niche product, supplying a small percentage of the pallet market, and because of cost and other limiting factors, are not considered suitable to replace wood pallets.
